SAN LORENZO.-
Formerly the church of La Anunciación, it was
dedicated exclusively for the use of Spaniards. The
first construction, which goes back to the year 1548,
was destroyed due to a strong snowfall in 1557.
Later restored, its name was then changed to San
Lorenzo de Carangas. The carved portal combines
Andean and Catholic symbols, and is considered to
be the definitive example of the mestizo baroque
style in Latin America. The interior consists of a
single nave and features a carved multi-coloured
choir.

CHURCH AND CONVENT OF SANTA TERESA.-
Built in 1685, at what was the limit of the Spanish area,
this building is a simple structure. The facade of the
convent is crafted in rose coloured stone, and the cornice
shows the shields of the Carmelite Order and of the
co-founders who financed its construction. Inside the
church is a high latticed and a multicolored gilded panaled
ceiling usual feature for what was a closed convent.

SAN FRANCISCO.-
The convent was founded in 1547 by Fray Gaspar de
Valverde. The church was built in granite with a baroque
facade, and its square tower is one of the highest in the
city of Potosí. The interior has a structure of double lined
arches. The current altarpiece of neo-classicist style
replaced the previous altar in 1810. People have come
here to worship Cristo de la Vera Cruz de Potosí since
1550.

THE CATHEDRAL.-
The first construction of this building was commenced 1564. In 1807 the original church
of a single crossed nave collapsed, making a new construction necessary. The current
cathedral of neo-classical architecture dates from the beginning of the 19th Century.
The cathedral is constructed of brick and stone, and is covered by a central vault, a
great central dome and twin towers. It consists of three naves with lateral chapels,
which form an octagonal design where they cross; the central nave is roofed simply,
while the lateral chambers are vaulted. The main altar belongs to the neo-classical
style and incorporates some gothic elements. There are outstanding columns that
feature gold laid over a white background, and at the base of the columns the original
colonial tiles are preserved. The building houses works of the sculptor Gaspar de la
Cueva and paintings by Juan de la Cruz Tapia.
