Towards the end of the 14th Century, these territories were annexed by the Inca Empire and
then conquered by the Spanish at the start of the 16th Century, culminating in the
foundation of the town Villa de Plata on 16th April 1540, later declared the city of La
Plata.
In 1559 the Audiencia of Charcas was created as part of the vice-regency of Peru. The
Audiencia had its seat in La Plata and its jurisdiction extended from Buenos Aires
to La Paz.
1624 saw the inauguration of the University Real y Pontificia de San Francisco Xavier and
the Caroline Academy, which shortly thereafter became the cradle for libertarian ideas in
the Americas.
During the 17th Century, Charcas saw vigorous university activity, wherein were formed the
majority of the intellectuals who sowed the seeds of the independence movement. In this
time the city of La Plata was renamed Chuquisaca, a contraction of its traditional Indian
name of Choquechaca, a change made in recognition of traditional values.
The War of Independence took place during
fifteen long years (1809-1825), a period which saw the participation of more than one
hundred local leaders, each heading his own band of freedom fighters. On the 6th August
1825, in a duly constituted assembly, the independence of what is today the Republic of
Bolivia, was declared in Chuquisaca. The city of Chuquisaca was designated as its
capital, and was renamed Sucre in honour of the Marshall of Ayacucho, José Antonio de
Sucre.
Towards the end of the 18th Century and at the beginning of the 19th Century, the city of
Sucre underwent a transformation in its architecture, mainly due to a mining boom. These
newer elements still remain and represent a very characteristic image of the city.
In her museums, churches, and archives; in her streets, parks, plazas and by-ways; Sucre
jealously guards the testaments to her active participation in the history of Bolivia and
South America. Sucre, more than a city; a beautiful living museum, whose homes and avenues
speak to us of her glorious past.
