the university where the Assembly that deliberated
and proclaimed the independence of Bolivia met on
August 6th 1825.
This precinct is conserved today and known as the Hall of Independence. It features a
carved and gilded baroque choir, splendid stals and the presidential armchair, as well
as commanding portraits of the liberators Simón Bolivar and Antonio José de Sucre
and the president José Ballivián; also on display are the swords of Marshall Sucre
winner in the battles of Junín and Ayacucho and of Ballivián who triumphed in Ingavi.
The ample colonial patio surrounded by stone galleries leads to the Senate Chamber,
where one can appreciate portraits of the presidents of the republic, insignias and
patriotic symbols, and furniture from the first years of the republic. The Colonial Room
displays documents and personal items; flags from the era of the Civil War and the
Pacific War; it also houses the remains of the famous freedom fighter Juana Azurduy
de Padilla and of the patriots Joaquín de Lemoine and Casimiro Olañeta, as well as
having other rooms which are used for occasional exhibitions. It also offers library
