FOOTPRINTS OF THE DINOSAURS.-
CALORCKO :
The area contains an impressive group of
dinosaur footprints located in the almost vertical calcareous
wall of Calorcko. Investigations suggest that they were made some
65 million years ago in the Cretaceous period when the place was
a plain. The land was raised and tilted many millions of years
later during geologic changes that characterised the region.
It is a recent discovery, and the
paleonthological investigations have produced surprising results;
some of the prints correspond to a young iguanadon of 5m high and
10m long, and the prints have a diameter of 0.80m. There are
examples of both biped and quadruped prints, indicating that the
different species co-inhabited the area.
|
The spectacular clarity with which this
group of prints is presented allows us to clearly observe the
trajectory and length of their steps, and to trace the route that
the dinosaurs would have travelled.
QUILA QUILA :
The town bears evidences of the struggle
between pre-Hispanic and colonial cultures. Today one can still
see the beautiful Catholic church that corresponds to this
period. In its interior are paintings representative of the time.
The small museum houses some archaeological and paleonthological
pieces of the region.
CRATER OF MARAGUA
The crater is a unique natural geologic
formation that at first glance seems to resemble a meteor crater.
It has an extension of approximately 8 kilometres˛. In the
surroundings of the exterior of this formation are several places
where footprints of dinosaurs and other fossils can be seen.

RUPESTRIAN PAINTINGS.-
|
INCAMACHAY :
There are many rock paintings that possibly
correspond to the Sauces culture of approximately 2500 years ago.
The red and white figures represent anthropomorphological,
zoological and geometric designs. Similar to the representations
of Pumamachay, they occur in a fascinating erosion sculpted
mountain landscape that presents curious and surprising
landforms. |
PUMAMACHAY :
The area has some interesting pictographs.
Painted in black, the images are principally
anthropomorphological and geometric. They correspond to the
Huruquilla culture, which has an approximate age of 1500 years. |
TARUCA HUASI :
Here also one can see basic black rock
paintings which feature zoological designs and spirals of a
diverse nature: It is located 16 kilometres from Sucre at an
altitude of 3650 m.
|
PETROGLIPHS.-
SUPAY HUASI :
Here one can see reddish brown pictographs,
that feature anthropomorphological and geometric, designs as well
as ideographic characters. They are probably contiguous with the
paintings of Incamachay, although the designs are quite distinct.
In order to reach the site it is necessary to tread rough trails
that wind through attractive mountain scenery.
TANGA TANGA :
Tanga Tanga has some stone engravings that
are located in four rock panels along the length of a ravine.
They correspond to a period in which ceramics were not painted,
and have an age of approximately 2500 years. The designs are
anthropomorphological, zoological and geometric representations,
combined in curious forms and intricate designs.
MARCA RUMI :
This is a group of rocks with petrogliphs
(engravings). They are located in the surroundings of Quila
Quila. The engravings represent several hundred interesting
anthropomorphous and zoological motifs, as well as abstract
designs. Their antiquity predates ceramic painting in the region.
|
INCA TRAIL.-
The trail covers a distance of
approximately 6 kilometres, descending from the summit of the
mountains of Chataquila to the valley of Chaunaca. For much of
its length the path follows a deep ravine. Paved in its entirety
with immense rocks, it also presents substantial retaining walls
and fords. Along this old route the leader of Tomás Katari's
1781 Indian rebellion was executed.
