UYUNI SALT FLAT (SALAR DE UYUNI).-
In the plains of the altiplano, where the horizon becomes infinite, is the Salar of Uyuni
- a great deal of salt in a space very far from the real world. From a distance it seems
like an endless lake of ice, or a memory of the sea of a long time ago, a white desert
that extends without limit. In the night the stars fill the sky, reflecting their light in the
immensity of the plain. Here time stops, and one can only hear the soft whisper of the
cold wind. In Salar of Uyuni the sky and the earth become one.
With an extent of 10,582 km², it is the largest salt FLAT in the world. It is situated at an
altitude of 3660m, and the average annual temperature oscillates between –25°C in the
night and 20°C during the day. This is to say it has a typical high altitude climate, dry,
cold, with low rainfall and intense solar radiation. Because of the extremely high rate of
evaporation in the southern altiplano, extensive salt plains have formed, principally
consisting of sodium chloride, sodium carbonates and magnesium. The salt beds are
relics of Lake Minchin that existed in the Pleistocene era. Because of the loss of their
waters they have been left as various salt pans or salt lakes, of which the Salar of
Uyuni is most notable, both for its size and its great beauty..
